Do you find yourself worrying about work when you should be relaxing, enjoying a hobby, or spending time with loved ones? Practicing law can be stressful, even on the best days. Now there’s a global pandemic, economic upheaval, and uncertainty regarding the future as well! Attorneys’ mental health is especially important, given how cerebral, emotional, and high-pressure our work can be. But it’s often overlooked.

This month, we are challenging you to get yourself and your practice ready for 2021. That means looking after your mental health as well as your business. You can’t serve your clients or invest your energy in building your practice if you don’t invest in yourself.

The practice of mindfulness has been gaining traction over the last few years, in part due to the Western world embracing traditional Eastern practices such as meditation and yoga. Mindfulness is a key component of meditation, encouraging us to be completely in the present moment without judgment. Practicing mindfulness can reduce stress, increase productivity, and improve your mood. It can also lead to increased self-awareness and emotional resilience. In short, it can make you a better lawyer and human being.

How to Incorporate Mindfulness Into Your Law Practice?

Learn how to be in the present moment at all times. As attorneys with a lot on our minds, we often contemplate the past or worry about the future, as opposed to being fully present in... the present. Worrying about the future robs us of the opportunity to do our best in the present. Have you noticed that you perform your best work when you are fully focused on the task at hand?

Here is this week’s tip: When you find yourself carried away by thoughts of what was said in past meetings or what will happen in court next week, simply notice the thoughts and gently guide yourself back to the present moment.

Recognize that where you are right now is the only place that you need to be. Take the time to enjoy the present moment…you know the work will be waiting there for you when its time comes.
