The Shift | Go from “I’m Really Busy” to “I’m Leaking Value”
Dec 31, 2025
Most firm owners don’t describe their days as chaotic (at least, not every day…). They describe them as full. Meetings, emails, client work, internal questions. The feeling of being stretched never quite goes away.
The default explanation is busyness: too many demands, not enough time. And because everything feels important, it’s hard to see where the problem actually is. The way we’re trained to think reinforces this. If you’re overwhelmed, it’s because you’ve got a heavy workload or you need better time management. So you try to work more efficiently, stay more organized, or push a little harder.
But busyness isn’t the real problem.
The real issue is that your time and attention are being spent on work that doesn’t require your judgment, often without you even realizing it. When this happens, the work that actually requires your experience, perspective, and decision‑making gets squeezed into the margins, the after-hours, and the weekends.
This is where the shift happens.
Your time and energy are vital to your business. The problem isn’t that you’re doing too much, it’s that some of what you’re doing carries less value than it costs you. When that happens consistently, value leaks out of the practice. Not all at once…but quietly, week after week.
Seeing it this way changes the question. Instead of looking at your to-do list and asking yourself, “How do I get through all of this?” you start asking, “What actually needs me?” That’s a very different lens…and a much more useful one.
Once you recognize value leakage, your goal stops being productivity for its own sake. Your goal becomes protecting your judgment, your time, and your energy for the work that only you can do.
You don’t need another system to see this. You just need space to reflect on where your time is going, what it’s costing you, and what you might be unconsciously holding onto.
Progress doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from focusing on the things that truly deserve your attention.
